Dr. Yu Zheng, Chief Data Scientist of JD Technology (JDT), was selected as one of the 2021 AI 2000 Most Influential Scholars in Data Mining. AI 2000 is an e-magazine using data provided by AMiner.cn which was developed by Tsinghua University.

This was announced on April 8 by Tsinghua University’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence; and the Knowledge and Intelligence United Research Center of Tsinghua University and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The awards cover 20 areas related to AI. Each year this awards honor the top 10 most cited scholars from the above mentioned 20 areas. In the period of last10 years (2011–2020), this program has honored total 2000 scholars.

Zheng ranked the eighth, with 35,667 citations from his 318 papers. It is the second time for Zheng to claim the award. Among the Chinese award-winners, Zheng ranked the first.

“To be awarded the title of ‘the most influential scholar in the world’ by an international authority is a recognition of my research in the fields of artificial intelligence, data mining and urban computing over the past decade. It will also encourage me to transform the results of academic research into a productive force, helping the government promote the modernization of urban governance, help enterprises reduce costs and increase efficiency, and let residents live a better life,” said Zheng.

The AI scholar award is one of the latest recognitions of Zheng’s performance and contributions in the field.

He was named fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an elite distinction awarded in recognition of a high level of achievement, in December last year.

Zheng was also named an Outstanding Young Innovator (TR35) by MIT Technology Review in 2013, as one of 35 top scientists under the age of 35 at the time. Past winners of the award have included Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg; Yahoo founder Jerry Yang; and Larry Page, co-founder of Google.

Under Zheng’s leadership, JDT has been making use of AI technologies to help Chinese cities in their drive towards digitalization.

Based on JDT’s intelligent city operating system, China’s first modern governance command center has been built in Nantong, Jiangsu province.

The command center can realize digital city management, enabling precise transportation forecast, intelligent monitoring for hazardous chemicals, environmental conditions monitoring and more, in addition to providing visual reports to manage the city.
