JD.com Deepens Commitment to Education with Launch of JINGDONG Hall and Smart Delivery Service Center at Renmin University of China
On May 17, JINGDONG Hall, a new building for the School of Sociology at Renmin University of China (RUC), was officially inaugurated at the university’s new Tongzhou campus in Beijing. Spanning approximately 31,000 square meters, the building was generously donated by Richard Liu, Founder and Chairman of JD.com and an alumnus of RUC.
In 2017, Mr. Liu donated RMB 300 million to establish the RUC JD Fund, which is the largest social donation in the university’s history. The fund supports the development of the Tongzhou campus and promote academic excellence in fields such as sociology, law, journalism, the internet, artificial intelligence, finance, and economics. It also aims to cultivate the next generation of academic talent through expanded scholarships, grants, and faculty awards, enabling outstanding educators and students—especially those from underprivileged backgrounds.
A JD.com spokesperson said that, “Guided by our business value of ‘achieving success the right way,’ JD.com is committed to creating social value through business practices and giving back to the communities.”
Coinciding with the announcement of JINGDONG Hall, JD Logistics launched a Smart Delivery Service Center at the campus. Designed to improve the delivery experience for students and faculty, the center will address the rising volume of on-campus parcel traffic and the need for more efficient, tech-enabled logistics.
With an area of nearly 700 square meters, the service center is equipped with JD Logistics’ latest technologies—including autonomous delivery vehicles, indoor delivery robots, intelligent lockers, and automated sorting systems.
JD Logistics’ sixth-generation autonomous delivery vehicles are now in operation on campus. Equipped with a 4-cubic-meter cargo bay and a maximum load capacity of 1,000 kg, the vehicle possesses Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities. With advanced perception technology powered by large-scale language model, the vehicles can navigate campus environments safely and avoid obstacles autonomously, delivering packages directly to dormitories, offices, and academic buildings. Indoor delivery robots are also used, which can operate elevators and access gates and fire doors, completing end-to-end indoor delivery tasks with full autonomy.
The Smart Delivery Service Center also offers a range of value-added services, including cold chain storage, temporary lockers for small parcels, shared trolleys, and reusable packaging. JD Logistics has partnered with recycling company AHS Recycle to deploy smart recycling machines, encouraging students to adopt greener lifestyles.
By integrating advanced technology with human expertise, JD Logistics is building a model of “human-machine synergy” that improves operational efficiency, reduces the physical burden on delivery staff, and provides a smarter, more personalized campus logistics experience.

JD.com Recognized on FORTUNE’s China ESG Impact List for Fourth Consecutive Year
JD.com has once again earned a spot on FORTUNE’s 2025 China ESG Impact List, marking its fourth consecutive year of recognition. The ranking highlights 100 companies demonstrating exceptional performance in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.
JD.com is named to 2025 FORTUNE China’s ESG Impact List on May 16
A Benchmark for Employee Welfare and Social Responsibility
FORTUNE China commended JD.com for setting industry-leading standards in workforce welfare, including being the first private enterprise in China to sign formal labor contracts and provide comprehensive social insurance and housing funds (“五险一金”) to all frontline employees.
In 2024, JD further solidified its commitment to talent development by launching its largest-ever global campus recruitment drive, offering 18,000 positions with significantly enhanced compensation packages.
The company also unveiled two landmark projects: a 110,000-square-meter global training base in Suqian, Jiangsu Province, designed to accommodate over 2,000 trainees, and the first phase of “JD Youth City,” a residential complex offering nearly 4,000 fully furnished apartments for employees. Notably, JD reported zero violations in information security and privacy protection in 2024.
Leading the Shift from “E” to Holistic ESG Progress
FORTUNE China observed a broader trend among Chinese companies this year: a shift from prioritizing environmental (“E”) metrics alone to embracing a more balanced approach with social (“S”) and governance (“G”) initiatives. As industries grapple with diminishing returns from hyper-competition, businesses increasingly recognize that human capital, like natural resources, demands sustainable stewardship. Many are actively reducing overtime, enhancing benefits, and emphasizing employee well-being.
JD.com exemplifies this evolution. With over 720,000 employees as of April 30, 2025, JD stands as a leading private employer model in China by embracing corporate responsibility. The company’s “People First” philosophy extends beyond traditional logistics, now covering full-time food delivery riders with full social insurance and housing fund contributions—a first in the industry in China. JD also assumes the riders’ personal contribution share, ensuring financial security and dignity for this growing workforce.
A Legacy of Promises Kept
Richard Liu, JD.com’s Founder and Chairman, reflected on a defining 2024 milestone: over 1,200 veteran delivery employees retired with comprehensive benefits, including steady monthly pensions, lump-sum housing fund withdrawals, and full medical coverage. “In 2007, when hiring our first delivery colleague, I pledged to secure their futures through comprehensive benefits. Today, that promise sustains tens of thousands of families,” Liu shared in a March social media post, calling it his “most fulfilling achievement” in 20 years of entrepreneurship.
On March 28, JD Food Delivery hosted a signing ceremony to welcome new full-time riders. This initiative aligns with JD’s decade-long dedication to frontline employees, celebrated on April 28 at the 10th anniversary of its “Frontline Workers Day.” Originally to honor delivery personnel, the event now recognizes diverse roles, from riders and customer service representatives to housekeeping cleaners and more, reinforcing JD’s mission to provide dignified, stable careers.
In December 2024, JD Logistics honored its courier Chen Haiyan with a retirement ceremony
JD.com remains committed to the company’s “People First” ethos, driving innovations in employee welfare and community impact. As the company grows, so does its resolve to empower every worker, ensuring not just livelihoods but brighter futures.
