This approach enabled the offering of a diverse array of popular branded products at discounts as steep as 50%.

This Singles Day marked a significant milestone for JD.com in terms of merchant growth and support. The platform witnessed a 3.4-fold increase in new shop registrations during this Singles Day, and the number of established merchants participating in the grand promotion increased by 1.5 times compared to last year’s grand promotion. A key driver of this growth was the “Spring Dawn Plan,” an innovative initiative by JD.com that distributed over RMB 100 million in subsidies to newly opened stores during this Singles Day, which attracted a wave of new merchants, thereby expanding product offerings for consumers. JD also launched a “RMB 1-yuan” package for merchants to access JD.com’s operational data open platform. The platform grants merchants comprehensive, real-time insights into store operations, enabling them to make data-driven decisions and optimize their business strategies effectively.

 

Brand Performance and On-Demand Retail Expansion

Numerous brands achieved explosive sales growth. During the first week of promotion, starting October 23rd, nearly 30 brands reached sales of over RMB 1 billion, and the transaction volume of nearly 15,000 brands increased more than fivefold YoY, with nearly 9,000 brands experiencing over tenfold growth in transaction volume.

Within 10 minutes of the sales period commencing on October 31st, major mobile phone brands like iPhone, Xiaomi, Honor, Huawei, OPPO, and vivo experienced a 100% increase in transaction volume YoY. This trend was not limited to technology; premium luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, GUCCI, and DIOR also saw their transaction volumes more than triple within the first 30 minutes compared to the previous year.

The surge of on-demand retail, featuring one-hour delivery, continues to gain momentum. This year’s Singles Day saw the integration of more than 400,000 brick-and-mortar stores into JD’s on-demand retail business, JDDJ, doubling the store network from the previous year. Consumers in over 2,200 counties and districts across China enjoyed the convenience of instant shopping, with products delivered to their doorstep within minutes. The ShopNow business saw a 60% YoY increase in the number of users placing orders, underscoring the growing consumer preference for quick and efficient shopping experiences.

 

Industrial Belt Collaborations

JD Super, the supermarket business under JD Retail, collaborated with over 2,000 industrial belts nationwide, showcasing hundreds of thousands of high-quality agricultural products that resulted in sales peaks. Fujian province’s dried yellow croaker and Yunnan province’s corn experienced YoY growth of 300% and 237%, respectively. The impact of the initiatives was further amplified through the “9.9-yuan Items with Free Shipping” program.

Additionally, sectors such as apparel, home appliances and furniture, and fittings and hardware within these industrial belts witnessed substantial growth. The number of merchants in these sectors expanded dramatically, with increases of 248%, 141%, and 150% respectively. JD’s private label brands, JZao and Huixun, were instrumental in enhancing this dynamic ecosystem, forging partnerships with over 70% of key industrial belts.

 

Logistics Supply Chain and Technology Excellence and International Expansion

On the logistics front, a Bosideng down jacket dispatched from JD Logistics’ flagship Qingdao industrial park on October 23rd marked China’s 100 billionth express delivery parcel in 2023. JD Logistics’ industry-leading logistics infrastructure ensures that 95% of JD’s retail orders can be delivered within 24 hours, with over 10 million products eligible for same-day delivery.

JD Cloud, the cornerstone of JD’s technology, saw peak user visits per second increase by 170% compared with the same period last year, and its intelligent customer service handled more than 1.4 billion inquires.

Additionally, JD’s omnichannel retail brand in Europe, ochama, marked another milestone this Singles Day by extending its doorstep delivery service to 24 European countries. In the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium, selected pick-up points extended their operating hours until 22:00, providing consumers with a wide range of quality products at low prices and flexible fulfillment and delivery services.

  • In the first week, the transaction volume from the livestreaming rooms of JD’s home appliances, furnishings, and digital products department increased tenfold compared to the previous month. JD’s supermarket livestream debut set a record with over 10 million views and sold over 350,000 items, with 50 products selling out instantly.
  • Fueled by the enthusiastic atmosphere in JD’s own product managers’ livestreaming sessions, within just 30 seconds of the opening on the evening of October 31st, the transaction volume for the entire category of home appliances, home furnishings, and lifestyle exceeded 10 billion yuan.
  1. Trending New Products are Gaining Momentum

This year’s shopping festival witnessed an elevenfold increase in participation from individual entrepreneurs and small business owners compared to the same timeframe the previous year. This influx of dynamic sellers has exponentially diversified and elevated the product offerings.

  • In the tech segment, transaction volume for gaming laptops, flip phones, over-ear headphones, and high-power portable chargers increased more than threefold, and the transaction volume for 3D printers increased by over tenfold.
  • New energy vehicles and cost-effective car accessories emerged as consumer favorites during this year’s shopping festival. In the event’s opening week, the order volume for JD’s entire automotive category increased by over 200%, with new energy vehicle orders tripling. Moreover, the transaction volume for car charging equipment increased by 3.9 times, while the transaction volume for car wraps increased by 3.8 times.
  1. Strong Growth in Cross-Border E-Commerce

In the first week of the promotion, the transaction volume of over 700 brands selling on JD Worldwide, the company’s import and cross-border e-commerce channel, increased by over 100% YoY. At the same time, the vast selection of affordable products, coupled with efficient and worry-free logistics services, also greatly boosted sales in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Transaction volume in Hong Kong doubled compared to the previous year, while Macau increased by 13-fold and orders from Taiwan doubled.

  1. Surging Demand for Travel Services

The travel sector saw a surge in consumer interest and engagement during the first week of the promotion. In the first week, the transaction volume of overseas vacation products increased to more than five times the previous year’s figures, while the transaction volume of flight tickets increased over 300%. Similarly, the transaction volume of flight ticket blind boxes and flight ticket bundles increased by over 13 times.

The promotion also kindled a significant interest in outdoor and recreational activities. Cycling apparel, road bikes, and skiing equipment transactions quadrupled, while badminton equipment sales saw an increase of 3.5 times.

  1. The Rise of On-Demand Retail with One-Hour Delivery

Just after 8 p.m. on October 31st, an illustration of JD’s advanced delivery capabilities was evident when Ms. Li from Jiamusi, Heilongjiang province, promptly received a cabbage she secured for a mere “1 cent” via the JD Daojia on-demand retail platform. During this year’s Singles’ Day, over 400,000 offline physical stores joined JD Daojia, doubling the number of participating stores compared to the previous year. Complementing this, JD Medicine’s dedication to offering 24/7 medication services was well-received, with the number of users placing nighttime orders increasing 2.5 times YoY.

On October 23rd at 8:00 p.m., JD.com kicked off its highly anticipated Singles’ Day Grand Promotion. Within the first 10 minutes of the event, both user orders and overall transaction volume skyrocketed, achieving over four times last year’s figures.

Foregoing the traditional pre-sale period, JD.com showcased an expansive inventory available for immediate purchase. Popular smartphones from renowned brands like iPhone, Xiaomi, and Huawei surpassed 100 million yuan in sales in mere seconds. Over 100 top-tier home appliance brands witnessed a tenfold YoY sales jump. Automotive products, especially new energy charging stations and innovative car accessories reported a 60-fold YoY surge. Notably, electric wheelchair sales saw a tenfold increase, highlighting a growing demand in elderly care products. JD Worldwide, JD.com’s import division, doubled its YoY sales across 280+ imported categories.

This year’s shopping festival features over 800 million products, all competitively priced and backed by a more than 30-day price guarantee. Products under JD’s 10-billion-yuan discount program exceeded 100 million yuan in sales within the first 5 minutes. Standout categories included toys from the industrial belts, growing by 200%, and Suqian hairy crabs which saw a 30-fold sales boost. Jewelry and accessory flash sales also crossed the 100-million-yuan mark.

JD.com’s superior service was a significant draw for shoppers. The home appliance trade-in program witnessed a 13-fold YoY spike within the first 10 minutes, and digital products in the 3C category saw sales triple. Omnichannel services through JD Super, catering to fast-moving consumer goods, surged elevenfold. Eyewear products, providing a 180-day exchange window, saw a 240% rise, and the autumn flu vaccine online booking service grew tenfold.

JD.com Joins UN Global Compact’s “Forward Faster” Initiative for 2030

On October 17th, JD.com announced it has joined the UN Global Compact’s “Forward Faster” initiative, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainability and global development. The announcement coincided with Sandra Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and CEO and Executive Director of UN Global Compact, visiting JD.com’s headquarters in Beijing, which marked the first enterprise visit of her China tour this week.

The UN Global Compact’s Forward Faster initiative, launched on September 18, 2023, calls on business leaders worldwide to take measurable, credible, and ambitious action in five areas — gender equality, climate action, living wage, water resilience, and finance & investment. These areas have the power to accelerate progress across all SDGs, enabling the private sector to collectively make the biggest and fastest impact by 2030.

To ensure customer convenience, JD will kick off the Grand Promotion at 8 p.m., a practice established since 2021 so that customers do not need to stay up late. Once again, JD breaks industry norms this year by making a vast array of products available for immediate purchase as soon as the sale commences on October 23rd. Shoppers can directly order sought-after items such as the iPhone 15, Wuliangye liquor, SK-II facial treatment essence, and more, ensuring quick delivery without any deposits or pre-sale wait periods.

Throughout this year, JD.com has intensified its focus on affordability, pioneering several initiatives like the “10-billion-yuan Discount” program, “9.9-Yuan Items with Free Shipping” channel, and “Double the Price Difference” guarantee, as well as lowering the free shipping threshold to RMB 59. The Spring Dawn Plan further propelled JD.com’s outreach, enticing a surge of new merchants, thereby expanding product offerings for consumers.

Merchant participation for this year’s Singles Day has increased 1.5 times compared to last year. The offerings under the “10-billion-yuan Discount” program have doubled since the 618 Grand Promotion in June. With the debut of JD Express in these regions, customers can look forward to receiving their JD.com orders swiftly, delivered by JD’s dedicated couriers right to their doorsteps, with orders from Hong Kong often fulfilled by the next day.

JD’s on-demand retail business, JD Daojia, will partner with over 400,000 physical stores to provide consumers across more than 2,000 counties and districts with “free shipping and delivery within hours across all product categories”, ensuring they have immediate access to a plethora of high-quality, cost-effective products.
