Haishan Zhao, the Lieutenant Governor of Hubei province, visited JD’s Asia No.1 logistics park in Wuhan. During the epidemic, the park supported people’s daily needs and helped local fresh produce go nationwide. Zhao said that JD.com took the initiative to play a leading role in fighting the coronavirus and ensuring the supply of daily necessities, and fully fulfilled its social responsibility.

 

JD.com’s 7FRESH LIFE and SEVEN FUN Obtain SGS’s Certification

On April 10th, the first stores of JD’s offline 7FRESH LIFE and SEVEN FUN stores (under the 7FRESH umbrella) in Beijing obtained SGS Group’s Hygiene Monitor Certification.

The program of SGS, the world leading inspection and certification company, is an internationally recognized audit system for food safety and hygiene management. The process is extremely strict and has 173 audit clauses, required to be completed each quarter. Top international hotels such as Hotel Lisboa in Macao and Hilton have obtained this certification, while many others are trying to get it.

The program requires that raw materials to be processed in the early hours of the day and arrive at the store in the early morning. Upstream suppliers, materials, quality inspection reports and goods’ shelf lives need to be managed strictly. Employees must pass trainings for key processing procedures. For salad at 7FRESH LIFE and SEVEN FUN, for example, when fresh vegetables arrive at the processing center, they are thoroughly cleaned with automatic cleaning and disinfection equipment, and then processed in high-clean dust-free area. The whole process minimizes human interference and is controlled to not exceed 12 hours.

JD.com’s 7FRESH launched a 24/7 7FRESH LIFE store and a lifestyle space SEVEN FUN in last December. 7FRESH now operates more than 20 supermarkets in China with an area ranging from several hundreds to several thousands square meters.

JD Big Data: Business Resumes Rapidly in Hubei Province

As the whole Hubei province is returning to life after lockdown, businesses in Hubei are gradually resuming operations. Looking at enterprise procurement, JD’s big data shows that although resumption of work lagged behind other places in China by one month due to the lockdown, it is recovering quickly.

From March 25th to 31st, the demand for goods from Hubei enterprises on JD’s platform increased 44.9% compared with the week earlier. Enterprises in higher-tier cities including Wuhan, Yichang and Xiangyang ranked top three in terms of demand, accounting for 21%, 19% and 17% of the province’s demand respectively.

From March 18th to 31st, the major demands were from public infrastructure and services enterprises with Bank of China, Wuhan Railway, Hubei Airport Co. and China Gezhouba (Group) Corporation leading the way. In addition, JD’s data saw that industries including finance, transportation and energy are resuming work comparatively earlier. Fifty-eight percent of Hubei’s enterprise clients who ordered on JD came from the financial industry.

During March 25th to 31st, procurement for food and beverages accounted for over 50% of all goods while cleansing and paper products accounted for 13%. Medical care, kitchenware and personal care categories increased the fastest with a week-on-week growth rate of 2758%, 498% and 347%.

It is worth noting that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have resumed business quite well according to the data. It shows that the weekly procurement from Hubei’s SMEs continues to grow. In just two weeks from March 18 to 31, JD Business, JD’s enterprise procurement platform, helped SMEs in Hubei save nearly RMB 6 million in procurement spendings.

On April 8, JD.com announced that it would invest more than RMB 6 billion in Hubei province over the next three years, launching a series of initiatives to support the recovery of Hubei’s economy and the development of local industry.

JD “Housing Plan” Funds Pool Expanded to RMB 1 Billion

JD announced today that it has expanded its employee “housing plan” fund pool to RMB 1 billion for employees who want to purchase a home.  Eligible employees can receive as much as RMB 1 million in interest-free loans.

JD kicked off this initiative in 2012 to help support employees with the down payment on their first house. The project was further upgraded in 2017 to support employees working in Beijing to buy houses in surrounding cities, such as Tianjin, and some cities in Hebei province. To date, nearly 1,500 JD employees have benefited from this project.

JD has implemented several welfare programs. The company previously established an aid fund to provide basic study and living expenses for the children of employees who are incapacitated or pass away. JD has also allocated more than RMB 500 million to help nearly 50,000 employees who opt to work during the Spring Festival holiday period to reunite with their families.

JD’s AI-Based Prescription Review System Recognized by Government

An advanced AI-based prescription review and analysis system co-developed by JD Health and a partner hospital has been recognized by Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission as one of the ‘AI + Health Collaborative Innovation Cultivation’ projects for 2020. The project will receive financial support from local government.

The AI-integrated system called PharmCOO (“Pharma chief operating officer”) optimizes the clinical prescription process and improves patient safety. It is expected to help the government control the cost of health insurance, and improve the efficiency and accuracy of  prescription from both medical institutions and pharmacies.

The core of the prescription review system is what is known as a knowledge graph based on Peking University Third Hospital’s vast database of pharmaceutical information. In the past, pharmacists in China were merely seen as “dispensers” of medication, rather than a source of medical knowledge and guidance. With new requirements for pharmacists to carefully review all prescriptions that doctors prescribe to ensure that there are no contradictions between medications, dosage is correct, and the patient understands how to use each drug, pharmacists are being forced to play ‘catch up’. According to the World Health Organization, over half of all medicines prescribed are either dispensed or sold improperly.

The advantage of the knowledge graph-based system is that it acts as a highly attuned and comprehensive expert for pharmacists. Using JD’s advanced natural language processing and deep learning technology, PharmCOO can provide doctors timely reminders on any contraindications, and consultation and guidance on use of various drugs, dosage. It can draw subtle, intelligent connections between a patient’s condition allergies to medication, and more. Rather than a static database, the knowledge graph-based system is unique in that it constantly learns from the experience of medical professionals, enabling it to improve accuracy, and taking the burden off pharmacists to memorize troves of medical data so that they can prioritize learning the most pertinent information.

JD Health is also introducing the system to Beihai City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Hebi City, Henan province, to build up a regional prescription review and circulation platform. The platform is expected to connect information systems of various hospitals in the region. Doctors’ prescriptions will be reviewed by the platform, and approved prescriptions can be circulated to offline pharmacies to make it easy for patients to get medicine and promote the separation of dispensing from prescribing in response to government’s call for health insurance cost-control.

JD.com Delivers to Beijing Residents at Lianjia Stores

JD.com now delivers convenience to Beijing residents at Lianjia locations across Beijing, which would further improve the last-mile delivery quality.

JD Logistics and Lianjia’s Beijing branch signed a cooperative agreement to provide convenience to consumers at residential compounds in the city, enabling customers who place orders on JD.com to choose a Lianjia offline store as a pickup location.

Lianjia(链家, formerly Homelink)is a leading Chinese real estate brokerage company with locations across the city of Beijing adjacent to residential compounds.

Both parties signed a strategic partnership on March 10th, and within a month expanded pick-up locations from only nine to 520 stores. JD expects coverage to reach all 1,400 Lianjia stores in Beijing. Lianjia also offers doorstep delivery service if needed.

JD and Lianjia, which has over 8000 stores in 14 provinces, plan to expand the service nationwide in the future, integrating JD’s parcel collection function into Lianjia’s app for convenient customer service.

JD’s Supply Chain Solution Supports Xiaomi 10-year Anniversary Sale

On April 9th, JD Logistics, an important partner of Xiaomi, provided a smart and integrated supply chain solution to ensure orders for Xiaomi’s 10-year anniversary sales promotion. In addition to JD’s couriers, JD’s autonomous delivery robot will also deliver Xiaomi products in Wuhan on the second day following the official end of the lockdown in the city.

JD Logistics’ integrated supply chain capability is highly relevant for Xiaomi’s product ecosystem. Based on 5G, big data and AI, both companies are integrating smart logistics with industrial supply chain. Since 2017, JD Logistics and Xiaomi have cooperated in warehousing, delivery, cargo transportation as well as distribution, covering Xiaomi’s product lines including cellphones, laptops, TVs, air conditioners, routers, sweeping robots and more.

JD Logistics also provides tailored solutions for Xiaomi’s product lines covering small, medium-sized items and bulky items. From October 2017, JD’s fully-automated logistics park in Shanghai has played a role in the standard supply chain operations (from inbound to outbound) for Xiaomi’s small items such as cellphones. In addition, JD’s Tianjin Asia No.1 logistics park and Dongguan Asia No.1 logistics park help Xiaomi handle bulky items and medium-sized items, respectively.

On February 13th, JD worked with Xiaomi to hold an online conference for the release of the new Xiaomi 10, the company’s leading 5G product, via JD Live, given that brands are unable to hold offline press conferences due to COVID-19. Sales of Xiaomi 10 quickly surpassed RMB 100 million following the official launch of the product on February 14th. JD also provided contactless delivery service for customers and saw a JD customer in Beijing become the first Xiaomi 10 user in China.

JD Shares Insights on Coping with the COVID-19 during a Webinar

On April 7th, JD shared its insight about COVID-19 in China and how JD has responded during an online webinar hosted by LLamasoft, a leading provider of enterprise supply chain design and decision-making solutions, and one of JD’s strategic partners.

During the webinar, Alfred Yao, supply chain optimization director of JD Logistics shared how JD adopted systematic measures to ensure consistent operations of the supply chain during the epidemic, such as prioritizing employee protection, establishing an emergency response program coordinating policies and efforts across functions, and employing flexible methods to increase contactless delivery, as well as applying intelligent algorithms to enable smarter delivery routing, in order to circumvent bottlenecks, to increase efficiency, and to prioritize supply to where strategic resources are most urgently needed.

Lei Zhou, strategic planning director of JD Logistics explained that the strong logistics infrastructure and six major networks JD has had for years helped the company in the response. “Wuhan is the hub for JD’s Central China region, but with challenges (like route suspension) we managed to redirect the volume to other DCs(distribution centers) nearby, such as Nanjing,” he said. “We saw orders increase a lot during this period, but were able to handle them. That’s mainly due to two factors: Firstly, based on an AI-enabled system, we try best to forecast where demand will be. Secondly, we leverage our network to put inventory nearest to customers. In this way, we can easily re-plan the inventory to respond to the special situation.” Zhou added.

Alfred also shared ideas for global companies as to how to quickly adapt to emergencies, advising companies to accelerate the digitalization of the business, to further boost the level of automation, to perform supply chain scenario planning and to make stronger contingency plans, all of which makes the supply chain more flexible and robust. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration with suppliers, customers and other stakeholders to enable a global supply chain community.

As far as how JD has helped partners during the epidemic, Alfred explained, “A global Fortune 500 company procured 55,000 bottles of hand sanitizer from overseas, and asked JD Logistics to transport them from Singapore to Shanghai by air. JD Logistics managed to complete the DGs(‘dangerous goods, such as many types of disinfectant) packaging and certification, and secured in the cargo space amid massive reduction of flights, and completed the customs clearance in the fastest way possible to have the goods delivered to the customer.”
