S&P Global released its inaugural Sustainability Yearbook (China Edition) on June 28, 2023. Published since 2008, the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook aims to identify and recognize companies across various industries that demonstrate exceptional performance and have a competitive advantage in sustainable development. This is the first year S&P Global has published a China edition, enabling companies in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau to understand their sustainable development performance in relation to their regional peers.

The Sustainability Yearbook identifies the top 15% of companies across various industries based on S&P Global’s ESG scores and grants different forms of recognition. S&P Global evaluated nearly 1,600 Chinese companies in 60 industries from its 2022 Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) and ultimately selected 88 companies from 44 different industries for its Sustainability Yearbook (China Edition) 2023.  Thousands of companies actively participate in the CSA, making S&P Global’s ESG scores insightful and comprehensive.

Fender Launched Online Musical Instruments Flagship Store on JD.com

JD.com welcomed Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC), one of the world’s leading musical instrument manufacturers, to launch its online flagship store on July 3, 2023. This collaboration marks Fender’s commitment to expanding its presence in the Chinese market and meeting the needs of musicians across the country.

“We’ve experienced tremendous double-digit growth from our inaugural debut in the China online retail market, so it is only natural for us to expand our journey with the industry leader like JD.com to further strengthen our direct relationship with Fender players in China.” said Edward “Bud” Cole, President of Fender Asia.

China has emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for Fender globally, second only to Japan.  The company aims to cater to the diverse community of musicians in China and provide them with access to Fender’s wide range of high-quality musical instruments and accessories through its partnership with JD.com.

Fender’s online flagship store on JD.com offers a full range of Fender® and Squier® products, including electric guitars and basses, acoustic guitars, amplifiers, and pedals. During this year’s JD618 Grand Promotion in June, the transaction volume of more than 300 musical instrument sellers on JD’s marketplace increased 50 percent YoY. Sales of keyboard instruments priced above 3,000 yuan increased by more than 1.5 times YoY, while the demand for beginner guitars increased, resulting in 2.5 times increase in related product sales. Transaction volume of musical instruments, audio equipment, accessories, and computer music categories increased by more than 1.8 times YoY. Roland, Yamaha, and Kawai ranked as the top three in terms of sales volume.

Twenty Ambassadors to China Collaborate with JD.com for JD618 Grand Promotion, Showcasing Unique Products from their Respective Countries

On June 16th, ambassadors from 11 different countries, including Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka visited JD.com’s headquarters to promote the imports of their respective countries’ specialty products during the peak of the 618 Grand Promotion.

Over 100 National Pavilions Showcasing 50 Countries

Currently, JD.com has established more than 100 online stores known as national pavilions for over 50 countries. Sales data shows that during this year’s 618 shopping festival, the total transaction value from these national pavilions increased over fourfold year-on-year. Exotic and novel specialties such as Sri Lankan Ceylon tea, Cypriot blue wine, and Kazakh camel milk are among the most popular items sold under the national pavilion project.

Yanzhong Yao, Senior Vice President of JD.com, expressed gratitude for the strong support received from authoritative institutions, including various embassies in China. Since JD.com launched its first national pavilion in 2014, the company has continuously expanded its offerings of high-quality international specialty products to meet the demands of the Chinese market. Currently, JD.com’s national pavilions offer over 5,100 specialty products annually and attract over 100 million active users. The national pavilions serve as a unique window into different countries’ cultures and as a bridge for communication between nations.

Prominent Endorsements and Praise

The success of JD.com’s national pavilions is evident in the endorsement from world leaders and diplomats. In May, President Tokayev of Kazakhstan personally witnessed the launch of JD.com’s Kazakhstan national pavilion in Xi’an, becoming the first head of state to do so. For the first time, JD.com’s Cyprus National Pavilion now features tourist products, supported by the Cyprus embassy and tourism department. Visitors can directly book tourism routes, including airfare and hotels, within the pavilion, offering a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the island of Aphrodite. JD.com is actively preparing to launch cultural and tourism offerings from countries including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Latin America, further enriching the e-commerce platform’s role in promoting international communication.

At JD.com’s June 16th national pavilion event, ambassadors and counsellors from numerous countries recommended their respective nations’ specialties and cultural products. H.E. Dr. Palitha Kohona, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to China, became a spokesperson for the “Island of Gem,” recommending the country’s high-quality blue sapphire products while inviting Chinese consumers to explore the country’s rich specialties. JD.com announced the successful conclusion of JD.com’s 2023 618 Grand Promotion today, which concluded at 23:59 on June 18. The event surpassed all growth expectations, delivering remarkable results for brand merchants and cementing JD.com’s position as an industry leader.

Sandy Xu, CEO of JD.com, emphasized during a ceremony in celebration of JD.com’s 20th anniversary on the same day that “diverse selections, fast delivery, high quality, and cost savings remain at the forefront of JD’s mission to serve our valued users.”

This year’s JD618 saw an unprecedented level of participation from online brand merchants, accompanied by a substantial increase in the number of offline physical stores joining the event. Tens of thousands of JD offline stores, millions of cooperating offline stores connected through JD’s extensive supply chains, and JDDJ’s collaboration with over 380,000 offline stores—a staggering 80% year-over-year increase in participating stores—joined forces to provide one-hour delivery service to a wider user base. In a further demonstration of JD.com’s commitment to variety, the company introduced over 1,200 new trending categories, expanding and diversifying the range of products, brands, and merchants on its platform.

Faster: Speedy Delivery

During the peak period of the 618 event, starting at 8 pm on June 17, more than 95% of counties across China enjoyed same or next-day delivery, setting new industry benchmarks for convenience and efficiency. The JD Shop Now program, featuring a one-hour on-demand shopping service, delighted over 2,000 county-level consumers. Additionally, nearly 1,000 counties received their orders within a mere ten minutes of the event’s commencement. Leveraging the DaDa delivery service upgrade, JDDJ further enhanced its delivery speed by an average of six minutes, ensuring lightning-fast fulfillment for customers.

Better: High-Quality Service

This year’s 618 event showcased over 200 services designed to enhance the overall shopping experience, alongside over 80 industry-first or unique offerings. Powered by advanced AI technology, JD’s virtual hosts and smart customer service played a pivotal role in boosting merchants’ branding and marketing efforts throughout the event. JD’s Yanxi virtual host contributed to a staggering 246% increase in merchants’ transaction volume compared to last year’s Single’s Day Grand Promotion. Additionally, JD’s Yanxi smart chatbot provided 24/7 seamless and personalized customer service support.

Cheaper: Cost Saving

This year’s 618 featured over ten times the number of participating products in the billion-yuan discount program compared to March 2023. Users clicked the “One-Click Price Protection” option over 660 million times during the event, guaranteeing affordable and quality products. JD.com’s pioneering “price protection” service, established in 2008, has cumulatively saved its consumers nearly RMB 8 billion yuan.

She emphasized three key areas of focus: the development of lower-tier markets, advancements in technology and services, and the expansion of international business.

In the realm of lower-tier market development, JD aims to provide affordable products while enriching its product offerings. By leveraging its robust supply chain capabilities, the company plans to reach a broader user base through low-priced product options. JD.com’s commitment to lower prices stems from its efficient supply chain operations, which enable cost savings without compromising quality or service. Initiatives like the recent “10 billion yuan discount” program and the “Spring Dawn Initiative” have already attracted numerous new vendors, resulting in a significant increase in product diversity to meet consumer demands. In the first quarter alone, the number of new merchants on JD’s platform soared by 240% compared to the same period last year, improving the product offering diversity to match consumers’ demands.

Within just 10 minutes, the transaction volume of 30% of domestic brands grew by 100% year-on-year. Additionally, JD’s cross-border and import platform, JD Worldwide, saw transaction volume increase over 100% year-on-year for 325 brands. The following summarizes the consumption trends and data highlights from the first 10 minutes of the sales climax.

This year, as JD.com proudly celebrates its 20th anniversary, the company remains steadfast in its commitment to provide consumers with an extensive array of high-quality products at competitive prices, accompanied by fast and reliable service. Staying true to its motto of  “More, Faster, Better, Cheaper,” this year’s 618 Grand Promotion is no exception, boasting over 1,200 additional popular product categories, enabling consumers to enjoy an even wider selection.   • Transaction volume of trade-in service for electronics grew by over three times year-on-year.
  • The furniture category, offering integrated delivery and installation services, saw a 130% year-on-year increase in transaction volume.
  • JD Auto’s offline installation service orders grew four-fold year-on-year.
  • Transaction volume initiated by JD’s VR room design feature grew over five times month-on-month.

Omni-channel retail has given rise to more diverse consumer demands. During this year’s grand promotion, JD’s on-demand retail platform, JDDJ, collaborated with over 380,000 offline stores to offer its “order online, ship from local store, and deliver within minutes” services. Other notable accomplishments include:

  • On June 17, JD Mall and JD E-Space saw an average of over 10,000 visitors per store in seven cities, including Xi’an, Shenyang, Dongguan, Kunming, Chongqing, and Hefei.
  • The total transaction volume for JD Super, JD’s omnichannel supermarket business, surged by 330%, with more than 80,000 storefronts participating in the campaign.
