JD Health offers Innovative Services during Coronavirus Outbreak

By Hui Zhang

JD Health, JD.com’s health care business and one of the highest-valued unicorns in the world, is continuously innovating amid the novel coronavirus outbreak to meet patients and consumers’  needs. JD Health has launched free online medical consultation services and ensured in-time medical supply in an effort to avoid cross-infections. It also invited top medical experts in China to give free live-streams to ease people’s anxieties about the epidemic. Here is how JD is making it happen.

Free Online Consultation Services

Starting on February 6th, JD Health expanded the scope of its free 24/7 online consultation to include all diseases. The clinical departments involved would address not only the epidemic-related respiratory, infectious and psychology departments, but also cardiology, endocrinology and pediatrics, amongst others. The services are available to not only residents of Hubei, but also all the people across the country having access to the Internet. This helps reduce the risk of cross-infection, provide timely and convenient consultation services for a large number of patients who can’t go to hospitals. Meanwhile, it can also help relieve the pressure on hospitals.

As early as January 26th, JD Health launched a free online consultation platform within JD’s app to people who suffer from symptoms such as cough, fever, fatigue, and diarrhea and wish to consult a physician. At the same time, JD Health offers a free hotline service for people who need psychological support, especially front-line medical staff working in a highly-intense and high-stress environment.

JD Health, JD.com’s health care business and one of the highest-valued unicorns in the world

JD Health convenes tens of thousands of expert physicians who offer a wide range of medical consultation services on its platform, and there are nearly 200 physicians employed as full time staff. The average daily consultation volume of JD Health’s platform has reached 100,000 since January 26th. During peak times, the free consultation is able to serve tens of thousands of patients within an hour. Nearly 60% of all free consultation requests are received and handled by respiratory physicians.

“As a doctor, although we are unable to go to the frontlines, we can serve more people on another battlefield. I’m honored to be able to provide patients with self-protection, medical guidance, and to help ease their anxieties through JD Health’s platform,” said Fan He, a full-time doctor of JD Health.

Securing Medical Supplies

Undertaking a quarantine or home isolation is an important measure to control the spread of the epidemic, but it also makes it inconvenient for people who need to see a doctor and buy medicine.

“People with chronic diseases, the elderly, infants and young children, and pregnant women are among those with high demand for medical treatment and medicinal purchases. However, these vulnerable people will not only have to face the risk of cross-infection if going to hospitals but will also increase the pressure for hospitals, which would feel the strain,” said Jianbo Xiao, general manager of JD Health’s Internet Hospital.

JD Health, which is the largest pharmaceutical retailer in China, ensures drug supply and promises not to increase prices during this period thanks to its direct cooperation with a large number of well-known pharmaceutical companies at home and abroad. In addition, JD’s unparalleled logistics efficiency and qualified pharmaceutical team also make it possible for consumers to buy the right drugs appropriate for their illness and get them delivered in time.

Live-streams by Medical Experts

JD Health has organized several live-stream experiences hosted by administrators or medical experts from top Chinese hospitals and medical veterans who have experienced the 2003 SARS epidemic to provide knowledge of coronavirus-prevention and psychological counseling. The live-streams are free to the public to help reduce their anxiety related to the epidemic, and JD Health promises to continue providing more live-streams in the future.

JD Health has organized several live-stream experiences hosted by administrators

“Facing this epidemic, JD Health is working day and night to ensure the quality of our consultation services,  and continually exploring new ways to help curb the coronavirus outbreak,” said Lijun Xin, CEO of JD Health.

In November 2019, JD Health completed its latest funding round at US$1 billion, valuing the start-up at around US$7 billion after it was spun off from JD.com in May. This makes JD Health the third unicorn to be launched by JD.com after JD Digits and JD Logistics.

JD Launches National Fresh Produce Green Channel

By Ella Kidron and Yuchuan Wang

JD is launching a new initiative to help farmers who are seeking a sales channel for their products due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. The “National Fresh Produce Green Channel”, referred to as the “Green Channel” for short, will help them sell products through JD’s channels, providing JD customers with more access to high quality and fresh produce.

In attempt to prevent further spreading of the coronavirus, there have been road closures and other transportation restrictions across China, putting pressure on the transportation infrastructure still in operation. As a result, many farmers had lost their sales channels and risked their seasonable produce becoming unsellable. At the same time, with the epidemic, demand for high, fresh quality produce which can be bought online is at an all-time high.

JD’s Green Channel leverages JD’s strengths in supply chain, logistics, platform operations, online marketing and omnichannel retail to address these challenges. Open to both existing and potential partners of JD Fresh, JD’s online fresh food business, the initiative provides 25 supportive policies to merchants, including fast enrollment, extra traffic, discounts or fee-free use of the platform, and more. Furthermore, JD Logistics will establish a special transportation channel to prioritize the delivery of produce, and ensure they arrive in a timely manner. JD Fresh will also launch two dedicated entrances on JD APP to the Green Channel by Feb. 14th, making it easier for customers to find.

Before the channel was officially launched, JD already saw some success from this approach. In early February, a strawberry farm from Sichuan province reached out to JD.com with an urgent request. Heavily affected by the outbreak, the farm’s usual wholesalers weren’t making the purchases they typically would, and it faced huge foreseeable losses. To help this farm, JD quickly allocated sales and marketing resources and launched the strawberries on JD.com. They are now being delivered across the country.

To help this farm, JD quickly allocated sales and marketing resources and launched the strawberries on JD.com.

Quality is of utmost importance and JD applies a rigorous evaluation process for potential applicants. Yisheng Tang, Head of JD Fresh, said:

“We will accelerate the sale of agricultural products facing sales difficulties while exercising strict quality control to guarantee the safety and quality of the fresh food we provide. Leveraging JD.com’s advantages in fresh food supply chain and cold chain logistics, we hope to better meet the demand during this special period of time.”

In addition, JD will launch a channel for local vegetables and fruit farms to sell produce  in its 7FRESH brick-and-mortar  supermarkets in Hebei, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Sichuan and Guangdong provinces. ‪JD’s Friend Shop group buying business for communities will also provide an “instant sales” policy for suitable suppliers of unsellable fresh goods. In Wuhan, Friends Shop is now delivering food supplies to approximately 30 communities, covering 50,000 families.

With the help of JD.com, sales of strawberries from Dandong, Liaoning province that were previously deemed unsellable have reached RMB 1.3 million since early February. In addition, JD has worked with mango producers in Sanya, Hainan province, to launch a “buy one, give one” initiative, with the aim of donating 200 tons of mangos to citizens in Hubei Province, where Wuhan is its capital.

JD is collecting information about reliable, unsellable produce from the public via xunxian@jd.com.

JD’s Cloud and AI Help Fight Coronavirus

by Yuchuan Wang and Ella Kidron

On February 4, JD’s smart epidemic assistant was integrated into the Wuhan Mayor’s Office WeChat account. Through the function, citizens can get coronavirus related information and services immediately, with high accuracy. On the day of the launch, there were over 250,000 visits to the function’s page.

The smart epidemic assistant is based on JD Cloud & AI’s universal smart conversation platform. The platform consists of AI capabilities including semantic understanding, syntax analysis and more, enabling the accurate understanding of user’s intentions through question prediction, intent recognition, classification and identification, similarity matching and other methods. Equipped with the latest information about epidemic information, the assistant is able to reply to user’s queries in real-time.

Currently it provides functions including epidemic self-screening, medical guidance, fever clinic inquiry, and a way to inquire if a user’s particular flight or train had a coronavirus patient on it. Queries cover everything from what to do if you are experiencing certain symptoms, to how to properly wear and dispose of face masks to prevent the spread of virus. Particularly complex queries that cannot be answered by the smart epidemic assistant are automatically transferred to customer service personnel.

In addition to Wuhan, the smart assistant service has also been launched in Beijing, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Sichuan and other provinces, serving dozens of industries, and more than 100 clients. It has already dealt with hundreds of thousands of inquiries. In Sichuan Province, JD is collaborating with West China University Second Hospital on a triage chatbot helping with the first round of patient triage and information collection. In Xinyu City in Jiangxi Province, JD launched a pilot program to use AI calls to help efficiently check residents’ health condition and remind them of epidemic-related information, greatly improving efficiency and avoiding the risk of disease transmission.

JD Cloud & AI also launched the “Emergency Resources Information Platform” which provides municipal and medical institutions access to 3,000 online quality suppliers and national emergency logistics services. As of February 4th, the platform had successfully performed 162 matches of epidemic prevention supplies with municipal and medical institutions in need. This includes but is not limited to the sourcing of more than 19 million masks, 19,000 pairs of protective googles, 12,290 bottles of liquid disinfectant, 1,000 tons of disinfectant powder, 8,991 body temperature monitors, 1,100 infrared thermometers, 64,970 sets of protective clothing and 152,600 pairs of protective gloves.

JD has been using its advanced ability in cloud and AI technology to make a significant impact across a wide range of areas during these trying times in China. Its cloud video conferencing service is now available for free for enterprises and individuals. JD also provides free online classroom service to students and teachers in Hubei Province, with Wuhan as its capital, who are unable to go to school due to the epidemic.

JD Merchants Donate to Fight Coronavirus

By Ella Kidron and Rachel Liu

Thousands of JD’s merchants, from large brands to individual sellers, have made donations of resources and time for coronavirus aid support. JD recently spoke to several of these merchants to hear the stories of how they are participating in the fight against the coronavirus.

30,000 food items worth 500,000 yuan

JD merchant Wang Ke donated 3,000 boxes of milkshakes and 2,000 boxes of energy bars to 18 Wuhan hospitals.

Wang operates the “Super Zero” flagship store on JD that officially launched in November last year as a newcomer to e-commerce. Inspired by one of his investors, an institution from Wuhan whose employees spontaneously formed a volunteer team to support doctors and patients during the epidemic, Wang also hoped to find a way to join in and support. After seeing a Wuhan doctor post a photo of New Year’s Eve “dinner” of crackers and instant noodles on social media, he determined that although he was in Beijing, the energy bars and milkshakes he sold might be able to help.

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, Wang mobilized his staff to pack the goods and arranged for transportation. With the traffic restrictions to, from and within Wuhan, he struggled to find a vehicle that would be willing to accept the order. After making hundreds of phone calls around his network in Hubei, he finally established direct contact with 18 Wuhan hospitals via the “Lan Pangzi” (“Blue Fatty”) volunteer organization, and found a vehicle to transport a total of 30,000 items, worth a total of 500,000 yuan, all donated to the hospitals for coronavirus aid support.

8,000 pairs of safety goggles

Li Pengzhi, operator of the Deyin Industrial Products Specialized Store on JD.com, donated 8,000 pairs of safety goggles to traffic cops and taxi drivers in Hubei province. A Shandong native, Li went to university in Wuhan and had fond memories of his time there. With the coronavirus outbreak, Li wanted to do his part to help. As the specifications of safety goggles for industrial use are different from those for medical use, Li determined that he could donate the industrial use safety goggles, worth a total of 200,000 yuan, to traffic cops and taxi drivers instead. In addition, Li donated 50,000 yuan towards supporting sanitation workers who are often overlooked and need protection.

Last inventory of masks

Li Yan, operator of Lian Yao Jia Ju, a furniture flagship store on JD.com, donated all of the remaining 1,000 masks she had in stock to Wuhan. One of her employees, Xiao Zhang, a native of Tianmen in Hubei province, was unable to go home for the Spring Festival holiday due to the road closures. To make matters worse, the employee’s relatives had contracted the coronavirus. Li Yan had already given Xiao Zhang many products, but she still wanted to do more, leading her to donate the masks. In addition, she donated 2000 yuan in cash through the JD Donation Platform towards coronavirus aid support. Li expressed, “If everyone lends a hand with whatever they have, everything will be alright.”

The coronavirus has galvanized everyone, from large international organizations to individuals to pitch in their support. Countless members of JD’s 210,000-employee staff, from logistics, technology, health and other teams, have been on the frontlines helping out. JD will continue to work together with its merchants and partners to contribute to the fight against the coronavirus.

JD’s Drone Debut in Hebei During Coronavirus Period

By Ling Cao

On Feb. 7th, JD.com completed its first delivery via drone to Baiyang Lake in Hebei province. JD will continue to operate this route during the coronavirus period.

It took the drone just a few minutes to fly about 2 km from Xidi dock at Baiyang Lake over the lake to a village on the  other side of the lake. Previously, JD couriers would deliver packages to the village by boat. With this route temporarily suspended because of the coronavirus, couriers would need to detour over 100 km to deliver to this village via land-based routes. The drone dropped the parcels at a fixed point in the village, where customers picked them up without human-to-human contact, better protecting both customers and JD couriers.

Hang Ba, head of JD’s drone program, said, “JD.com has leveraged automation to improve efficiency and convenience for last mile delivery. Customers here buy snacks, electronics and daily necessities – all of which can be delivered by drone. We are happy to see the unique value our drone can deliver during this special time.”

JD.com plans to launch drone delivery in other cities, such as Hohhot, Jilin, etc., to address challenges presented by the coronavirus. Last week, JD’s robot delivered its first order in Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic.

How Chinese are Spending during the Coronavirus Outbreak

by Yuchuan Wang

JD has continued its commitment to deliver products to Chinese consumers during the Chinese New Year, for eight years now. This year has been unique as hundreds of millions of Chinese choose to stay indoors because of the outbreak of the highly contagious novel coronavirus.

According to JD’s big data analysis, from this past Chinese New Year’s eve on January 24th to February 2nd, JD has delivered 19,000 tons of rice and flour, 5.9 million liters of cooking oil, 15,000 tons of fresh food, 15 million packages of instant noodles and hundreds of millions of medical supplies to consumers nationwide.

Sales of food products such as rice and dairy during this period increased 154% year-on-year (on the lunar calendar), with rice and wheat products increasing at 5.4 and 4.7 times, respectively. Compared with a year before, the consumption of cereals surged on January 25th, and on January 26th, sales was as much as 15 times compared with the same day on the lunar calendar last year.

Sales of instant food products increased 3.5 times year-on-year. Bottled water and cooking oil increased 1.54 and 1.43 times while dairy and seafood products doubled.

Fresh food on JD saw an increase of 215% compared with the same period last year. After the outbreak of the epidemic, JD immediately launched the “fresh produce emergency team”. Procurement and sales personnel pay close attention to sales trends and established a daily mechanism to update inventory levels and production information, preparing countermeasures in advance. Sales of pork increased the fastest by more than 10 times y-o-y while sales of beef, mutton, poultry and eggs also increased 400%. Vegetable sales increased by nearly 450% compared with the same period last year.

JD has also implemented rigorous health and safety measures, including providing protective equipment such as masks and disinfection products to consumers. From January 20th to 27th, the sales of a series of cold and antipyretic drugs, such as Banlangen(a popular Chinese herbal medicine), vitamin C effervescent tablets, acetaminophen and others increased by 5.5 times over the same period in the previous month; sales of oximeters increased 18 times and sales of thermometers increased 11 times. At the same time, sales of sterilized alcohol increased 20 times compared with the same period a month prior. JD also supplied 3 million bottles of hand sanitizer, over 1.8 million bottles of disinfectant, over 700,000 bottles of germicidal detergent, nearly 400,000 bottles of clothing antiseptic, 290,000 bags of disinfectant wipes and 180,000 bottles of toilet cleanser to Chinese consumers.

Immediately following the outbreak of the epidemic, JD urgently contacted key brand partners in various categories to integrate inventory to secure supply to consumers as well as frontline workers in Wuhan. As early as January 17th, JD transported 5 million masks to Wuhan, the epicenter of the epidemic (Read more about JD’s support in Wuhan: https://jdcorporateblog.com/jd-com-on-the-frontlines-to-support-wuhan-and-provide-coronavirus-aid/ ).

JD’s nationwide brick-and-mortar 7FRESH supermarkets also perform strict disinfection measures including implementing staff morning health condition examinations, random body temperature checks during work, strict implementation of a seven-step hand washing standard, providing masks to employees and launching clear procedures and standards for disinfection of public facilities, tools and tableware, amongst other actions.

JD.com has been doing its utmost to ensure not only adequate supply and timely distribution of anti-epidemic goods with the help of its leading supply chain system and efficient logistics network, but also has a mission to provide stable prices and quality service in extraordinary times, playing an important role guaranteeing people’s daily needs of life.

JD Retail ensures supply during coronavirus

by Rachel Liu

From January 24th to February 2nd, JD.com has sold 18,900 tons of rice, flour & grain; 15,000 tons of fresh food; 5.9 million liters of cooking oil; 1.8 million bottles of disinfectant solution; and 3 million bottles of liquid soap. During the same period, sales of rice on JD.com increased 5.4 times year-on-year, and sales of flour increased 4.7 times year-on-year. The supply of daily staple food necessities cannot be achieved without the joint efforts of JD’s sales and supply chain team.

Like previous years, JD.com has applied its technology and insights to beef up stock inventory prior to the festive celebrations this year. What was unexpected was how very quickly things would change for people in both the epidemic epicenter of Wuhan and around China.

The outbreak has changed the shopping habits of Chinese consumers during the holiday as more and more customers are shopping for daily products online instead of offline. As China’s largest retailer, JD.com is sparing no efforts to ensure supply of Chinese consumers’ daily necessities at this time.

JD’s sales team has worked actively with brand partners to ensure there is enough inventory for much needed daily products in JD warehouses. From January 1st to January 24th, there has been 1.9 million bags of rice and grain (around 10,000 tons in total) from Chinese rice brand Shiyuedaotian delivered to JD warehouses. From January 26th, Shiyuedaotian has delivered 500,000 bags of products to JD in just 4 days. From January 25th to February 1st, Chinese brand Yihaijiali has sent 1 million bottles of Jinlongyu cooking oil to JD. JD also actively worked with Safeguard on the supply of anti-bacterial liquid soap, and from January 20th to February 1st, there were over 270,000 bottles of Safeguard liquid soap in delivery to customers.

Since the coronavirus outbreak occurred during the Chinese New Year period, some brands and suppliers were not able to send their products to JD warehouses. To address this efficiently, JD leveraged JD Logistics to pick up the products directly from brand warehouses to ensure inventory. For example, as of January 31st JD has picked up 350,000 Welch products in two batches from its warehouses in Guangzhou, Kunshan, Tianjin and Chengdu. JD is also using this model to cooperate with brands including Safeguard, SC Johnson Wax, LION, and others.

To protect consumer rights, JD also ensured that the product prices remain stable. Products from JD’s first party business will not experience price increases and JD is also rigorously regulating its third party platform to forbid unfair price hikes, with penalties to third party sellers if unfair price hikes are discovered.

Additionally, to help merchants with the operational challenges caused by the coronavirus, JD Retail announced 11 subsidy support measures to merchants, including expense reduction, finance and logistics support, traffic support, technical support and more, especially to merchants in Hubei province.
