JD Report: From Pink Fashion to Mythical Literature: How “Barbie,” “Fengshen,” and “Chang’An” Are Shaping China’s Consumer Trends

China’s cinematic world is not just lighting up screens but also sparking new consumer trends. With summer blockbusters including Barbie, 30,000 Miles from Chang’an, and Fengshen, among others, moviegoers are bringing their love for these films into their lifestyles, driving a surge in related products on JD.com.

According to JD.com’s Consumption and Industry Development Research Institute’s “July Film Consumption Observations” report, searches for keywords related to these three films on JD.com experienced significant year-on-year increases. “Fengshen” saw a 430% increase, “Li Bai,” the famous poet featured in the Chang’an film, grew by 155%, and searches for “Barbie” grew 101%.

A Colorful Wave Inspired by Barbie

Barbie has not only charmed audiences but ignited a love for all things pink. The trend swept across various fashion products, ranging from camisoles and dresses to wide-leg pants and earrings. The appetite for pink-themed products soared, with growth rates varying from an already impressive 156% to an astounding 1,055%. This penchant for pink even led to a tenfold increase in shoppers buying pink sneakers year-on-year.

Among consumers purchasing pink-themed products, 75% were female, with female users accounting for over 80% of purchases for items including pink sun hats, earrings, and headbands. Age-specific preferences also emerged. The post-2000 generation favored pink keyboards, while post-1980s shoppers leaned towards pink lipstick, and the post-1970s generation was more inclined to purchase pink sun hats.

Literary Influence of Chang’an and Fengshen

The historical charm of Chang’an and the mythical allure of Fengshen had an unprecedented impact on book-related products. Searches for titles including Li Bai and His Friends, Fengshen Bang, and Chang’an Ke, soared by YOY increases ranging from 103% to 745%.

The number of shoppers buying books related to Fengshen and “Li Bai” also saw substantial growth rates of 110% and 90% respectively.

Female readers showed a preference for Chang’an Ke, a captivating book that offers eight stories of famous Chinese poets from the Tang Dynasty. Male readers were drawn to Fengshen Bang, also known as the “Investiture of the Gods,” a 16th-century novel rich with Chinese mythology, featuring deities, immortals, and spirits.

Different age groups also had varying interests, with the post-2000s generation showing more interest in Chang’an and the post-1970s generation showing a greater interest in Fengshen.

According to data from the National Film Administration, China’s total box office revenue for July 2023 reached an impressive 8.716 billion yuan, marking a substantial 25% increase compared to the same period in 2018. With more films set to be released in August, JD.com’s report anticipates a growing demand for film and TV-related merchandise, as well as cultural and fashion products. Thanks to the booming cinema market, this trend is expected to contribute to the overall growth potential of the consumer market.

JD Foundation Announces RMB 30 Million Donation to Aid Flood Victims in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei Amid Typhoon Doksuri Crisis

The JD Foundation has announced a RMB 30 million worth donation to extend urgent disaster relief to those affected by Typhoon Doksuri’s devastating floods in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. The first wave of donated essential supplies has already been delivered to those on the front lines.

With the prompt coordination of resources, the company has prioritized the delivery of vital emergency supplies to vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and critically ill individuals in need of rescue.

JD Technology’s Pioneering ESG Work: Championing Social Equity Through Innovation

JD Technology, a subsidiary of JD.com, released its 2022 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report on July 27, showcasing a myriad of achievements that are shaping the future of digital technology in sustainable ways.

The report highlights JD Technology’s work in digitizing municipal services across over 100 cities, providing digital solutions to 914 financial institutions, and empowering 430,000 SMEs with loans amounting to RMB 51.1 billion.

 

Biological Assets Digital Platform

Promoting social equity through digital technologies is at the heart of our ESG efforts. One example of this is JD Technology’s Biological Assets Digital Platform, introduced earlier this year.

Leveraging technologies such as IoT, AI, and blockchain, the Biological Assets Digital Platform constructs a digital twin of real agricultural assets. This unique approach allows all stakeholders, from financial institutions to farm owners, to monitor the assets in real time. The platform has already enabled businesses and farmers to obtain RMB 7.3 billion in loans.

 

Case Study: Xinzhongsheng Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Group

Xinzhongsheng Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Group owns two sheep breeding bases with 100,000 sheep and a breeding farm with 10,000 breeding sheep.

Xinzhongsheng had ambitious plans to expand, but they faced financing challenges that are common in the highly-volatile livestock and aquaculture farming industries. Xinzhongsheng needed a creative solution, and they found it in JD Technology’s Biological Assets Digital Platform.

JD Technology deployed smart cameras in Xinzhongsheng’s breeding bases, which support real-time supervision and conducted automatic inventory reviews of sheep with the help of AI algorithms and big data capabilities.

By leverage the platform, financial institutions including Chang’an Bank and Shaanxi Yuzheng Financing Guarantee Company were able to access accurate inventory results and obtain data that enabled them to reduce post-loan management risk. This approach enabled Xinzhongsheng to successfully secure a loan of RMB 10 million.

 

Empowering Rural Credit Officers with a New WeChat Mini Program

In May, JD Technology took another innovative step by launching a version of its digital platform as a WeChat mini program, tailored for individual rural credit officers and farmers, providing services free of charge.

This mini program has revolutionized the traditional loan-access process in agriculture, using AI technology to automate the verification of biological assets like cows, sheep, and pigs through uploading photos. It not only makes the process more convenient and intelligent but also reduces post-loan management costs.

The annual ranking recognizes the largest companies measured by their revenues. In 2022, JD.com achieved a 9.9 percent year-over-year growth, reaching full-year net revenues of RMB 1.0462 trillion. This notable achievement also marked the first time JD.com surpassed the milestone of RMB 1 trillion yuan.

JD.com’s inclusion on the Fortune Global 500 list since 2016 demonstrates eight years of significant expansion and progress, as illustrated by the following figures:

In the wake of the devastating floods triggered by Typhoon Doksuri in China, JD.com has launched a comprehensive support initiative to assist car owners that includes around-the-clock, free online consultations, free offline inspection services in 1,400 car maintenance stores,  as well as emergency rescue and repair services to provide timely assistance.

Car owners now have instant access to expert advice on car insurance and maintenance through the JD App, simply by searching for “Car Doctor”. This dedicated portal offers effective solutions to common problems encountered by car owners during floods, including how to handle water-logged cars and filing insurance claims for water damage, such as filing an insurance claim for water damage.

JD’s team of experienced “Car Doctors” can also provide recommendations and directly connect car owners with JD’s self-operated car maintenance stores and partner stores, ensuring immediate, on-site repair assistance.

JD Auto Opens Its First Self Operated Car Maintenance Store

In addition to these services, JD Car Maintenance has also partnered with local service providers to deliver 24/7 emergency rescue support. For instance, in Fujian province, JD has teamed up with 10 providers spread across cities including Putian, Fuzhou, and Quanzhou, to ensure swift response and assistance within these designated areas.

In recent days, JD Car Maintenance stores have noted a significant surge in the number of cars affected by water damage.

JD Health Brings No-Cost Medical Consultations and Care to Guizhou’s Mountainous Regions

From July 12th to 14th, JD Health collaborated with several charitable organizations to provide medical support in the mountainous regions of Guizhou province, located in southwest China. Together with the Lingfeng Foundation in Beijing, China Volunteer Medical Team, and China Social Assistance Foundation, JD Health organized free medical consultation charity events and distributed essential health supplies to address the healthcare needs of rural elderly, chronic disease patients, and disabled individuals. The initiative aimed to conduct free medical consultation charity events and provide essential health supplies, addressing the healthcare service needs of the rural elderly, chronic disease patients, and disabled individuals.

A team of distinguished doctors from prominent hospitals nationwide participated in this initiative. Their specialties encompassed a wide range of medical fields, including internal medicine, cardiology, respiratory medicine, neurology, orthopedics, gynecology, dermatology, general practice, pain medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and rehabilitation medicine. They were split into four distinct teams, each comprising 6 to 10 medical professionals, who visited various villages to offer in-person medical consultations to locals.

Simultaneously, these experienced doctors conducted daily instructional sessions for village doctors, aimed at enhancing their competency in providing primary healthcare services.

Thanks to the generous support from JD Health and JD’s charitable platform, where merchants can donate via their sales, a total of 9,500 over-the-counter medicines – from pain relief ointments to eye drops -were donated based on the specific needs of the local communities and doctors’ recommendations.

Over the past year, JD Health has formed several effective partnerships with charitable institutions, providing “small medicine boxes” to those in need across China’s rural communities. These contributions have included post-earthquake rescue efforts in Luding, Sichuan, improved emergency response capabilities of grassroots healthcare institutions in Henan, and provided medical supplies and medicinal education to 365 rural schools in Gansu and Sichuan provinces. Through these actions, JD has demonstrated its ability to effectively collaborate with pharmaceutical companies, doctors, merchants, and charitable organizations, utilizing its supply chain connections to promptly and precisely meet diverse healthcare needs.

This year, JD Health has broadened its philanthropic reach, offering more targeted and personalized healthcare support to vulnerable populations in rural areas.  Initiatives have concentrated on diverse demographics, including rural women, children, migrant workers, outdoor laborers, and pneumoconiosis patients.
