JD.com Report: China’s Silver Generation Adopts Youthful Shopping Trends

On the occasion of China’s Double Ninth Festival – a  traditional event on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month – JD.com’s Consumption and Industry Development Research Institute has released its “2024 Silver-Haired Consumer Report.” The report highlights an increasing convergence between the spending habits of China’s older and younger generations.

The report, based on surveys of 500 older adults and 500 younger individuals, identifies similarities in consumer preferences across areas such as, fitness, travel, skincare, and lifestyle. It reveals that China’s older adults are rapidly becoming a key force in the online consumer market, exhibiting greater spending power and a growing appetite for a wide range of modern products and services.

Blurring the Boundaries

One key finding is the increasing digital proficiency among older adults. According to the report, 60.7% of older adults spend more than three hours a day online, engaging in activities such as online shopping, reading news, mobile payments, and video streaming. These activities have become an integral part of their daily lives, nearly matching the habits of younger generations.

Online shopping by seniors has seen remarkable growth. From January to September 2024, the number of transactions, active shoppers, and spending by this group on JD increased by 238%, 187%, and 105%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2019. Their purchases range from basic necessities to high-tech gadgets and home appliances, with JD.com being the top choice for 95.3% of older shoppers.

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics indicates that China’s population aged 60 and above reached 280 million in 2022, with over half being younger seniors aged 60-69. This demographic is generally well-educated, financially capable, and open to new experiences, leading to consumption habits increasingly similar to those of younger generations. The report notes that younger consumers’ spending trends are also influencing the lifestyles and consumption patterns of the elderly, further blurring the boundaries between the two groups.

Growing Appetite for Modern Shopping

Health and wellness have become major priorities for older adults, reflected in the rising demand for nutrition and fitness products. Sales of probiotics and health tonics increased more than tenfold and threefold, respectively, while fitness equipment like kettlebells and resistance bands more than doubled in sales. Additionally, sports gear for activities like badminton and pickleball saw an 80% increase in demand.

Fashion and beauty spending among seniors has also surged. Jewelry and beauty product sales have climbed, with sales of rings up by 307% and jade necklaces by 132%,. Anti-aging skincare products and personalized fashion items have seen a more than tenfold increase in sales.

Older consumers are not only embracing products designed for their age group but also cutting-edge technology. Sales of electric beds and shower chairs have grown by 152% and 202%, while smart locks and switches, like kitchen appliances, are becoming more common in senior households. Sales of smart bathroom cabinets, for instance, have risen by 277%.

Beyond essential purchases, seniors are driving demand for leisure activities such as photography, travel, and music. Sales of instant cameras jumped by 165%, while live-streaming equipment and digital cameras saw sales double. Pet care is another area where spending has surged, with prescription pet food sales rising by 332% and pet health products growing by over 100%.

JD Super Partners with Wuchang to Celebrate the Rice Harvest Season, Delivering Authentic Wuchang Rice to Consumers at Competitive Prices

On September 19th, JD Super, the supermarket division of JD.com, collaborated with the city of Wuchang and leading local businesses to officially launch the Wuchang rice harvest season. This partnership highlights JD’s commitment to promoting premium agricultural products and providing customers with access to authentic Wuchang rice at competitive prices, thanks to a direct-from-source supply chain.

To mark the event, four international influencers were invited to experience the rice harvest firsthand in the paddy fields. Brian, an influencer from Argentina, was impressed by the large-scale mechanized farming operations in Northeast China, witnessing the entire process from plowing and seedling cultivation to transplanting and harvesting. Ameen, a journalist from Iraq, marveled at how China, with only 9% of the world’s arable land, is able to feed 20% of the global population.

Russian vlogger “Liu Nasijia” gained a new appreciation for rice, discovering its versatility beyond its use in traditional sushi, thanks to the Wuchang rice tasting. Meanwhile, Rwandan influencer “Xiao Hei Tan” pointed out the affordability of JD Super’s rice product offerings, noting that while rice in Africa typically costs around 5-6 yuan per 500g, JD Super offers it for under 3 yuan per 500g, making it highly accessible to consumers.

Wuchang, located in Heilongjiang Province in Northeast China, is known as the “Home of Premium Rice.” For nine consecutive years, Wuchang rice has topped China’s regional brand value list. Harvested once annually, the rice has a growing cycle of approximately 150 days, with the harvest taking place over 15 days in late September.

To ensure a steady supply of high-quality Wuchang rice, JD Super has partnered with leading local enterprises, including Jinhe Rice Industry, to offer exclusive sales. By establishing a dedicated rice production base in Wuchang’s core agricultural area, JD Super ensures that customers receive only the finest rice.

Since 2019, Wuchang has been selling traceable, authentic Wuchang rice through two flagship stores on JD Super. In addition to helping local businesses in Wuchang establish brand stores and expand their online presence, JD Super’s sales of Wuchang rice now exceed 1 billion yuan annually.

A notable success story is Jinhe Rice Industry, whose premium brands, Shengshangyipin and Tianzuogushi, have seen significant growth through exclusive offerings on JD Super, including organic Wuchang rice and germ rice. By leveraging JD’s “10 Billion-Yuan Discount” program, Jinhe Rice Industry saw a 138% sales increase from January to August 2024, surpassing the growth of JD Super’s overall rice category.

On September 19th, JD Super also launched its third annual Agricultural Specialties Shopping Festival. By eliminating middlemen and sourcing products directly from farms, JD Super ensures that consumers enjoy top-quality agricultural products at the most competitive prices. With initiatives like the billion-yuan agricultural subsidies and livestream sales, JD Super is making premium, authentic goods more accessible to shoppers across China.

Leveraging AI to Drive Innovation, Reduce Costs, and Create Jobs: Insights from JD.com’s Chief Economist

At the 2024 FORTUNE Global 500 Summit in Guangzhou on September 26th, Dr. Shen Jianguang, Chief Economist of JD.com, shared how the company utilizes AI to transform its operations across retail, logistics, and more, while driving significant workforce expansion. “By integrating advanced technologies throughout our business, JD.com has more than tripled its workforce in the past six years from 180,000 to 620,000, all while increasing salaries,” Dr. Shen explained during the panel discussion titled “‘Changes and Opportunities’—Chief Economists’ Perspectives.”

AI tools have enabled JD.com to boost efficiency and elevate the customer experience. For example, JD’s AI-driven digital human livestream hosts have helped over 5,000 brands increase off-peak hours’ sales conversion rates by 30%. Additionally, AI-powered customer service representatives offer more personalized support, and logistics couriers use AI to deliver packages faster and with greater sustainability.

JD.com’s customer service representatives

“The competition in China is so fierce, and that’s what drives innovation—you have to innovate to survive,” said Dr. Shen, underscoring the role of innovation in reducing costs and increasing productivity. This is especially crucial in China’s e-commerce landscape, where consumers are becoming more price-conscious. “Consumers are looking for the ‘extreme quality-to-price ratio,’ meaning they want high-quality products at lower prices,” he added. At the same time, Dr. Shen noted a growing trend in rural and lower-tier markets, where significant growth opportunities are emerging.

Dr. Shen also discussed China’s recent economic stimulus packages. “Policy initiatives are important. When people perceive a shift in policy, the market responds,” he said, referring to the government’s subsidies for home appliance trade-ins introduced earlier this year. This program has stimulated demand for affordable, high-quality products, as reflected in the increased sales of subsidized items.

Guangzhou, the host city for the summit, launched a new round of consumer goods trade-in subsidies on September 1st, positioning online platforms like JD.com as essential providers of seamless trade-in services. Over 800 home appliance brands have partnered with JD.com in Guangzhou, offering more than 8,500 products. Additionally, JD.com is working with its brand partners on a Customer-to-Manufacturer (C2M) model, leveraging consumer insights to drive innovation for more tailored products.

JD.com provides one-stop trade-in services for home appliances and home goods

The panel discussion featured Dr. Shen alongside Minggao Shen, Global Chief Economist at GF Securities, and Robin Xing, Chief China Economist at Morgan Stanley, with FORTUNE Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell moderating. The panelists agreed that while AI is still in its early stages, its potential is vast. With China’s stimulus policies and a functioning capital market, the private sector is well-positioned to unlock considerable industrial and social value.

JD.com ranked #47 on the 2024 Fortune Global 500, moving up five spots from the previous year. Guided by its mission to “Make Lives Better through Technology,” the company remains committed to cost management, operational efficiency, and enhancing user experiences, while continuing to invest in employee development and upskilling to foster both business growth and workforce advancement.

JD Logistics Awarded the World’s First ISO14068 Carbon Neutrality Certificate for On-demand Delivery Service

JD Logistics (also known as Jingdong Logistics) recently announced that it has been awarded the world’s first ISO14068 carbon neutrality certificate for on-demand delivery service by Bureau Veritas, a global leader in testing, inspection, and certification. The certificate comes as a result of JD Logistics’ ongoing commitment to sustainability in supply chain and logistics operations.

JD Logistics has been providing on-demand delivery services for a global technology company since 2022 and has become the brand’s first logistics service provider in China to provide in-dependent, full-lifecycle carbon neutral services at the order-level. Through this partnership, JD Logistics track supply chain carbon footprints and implements precise carbon reduction technologies based on data analysis. JD Logistics has pledged to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 for the project, while assisting its partners in reaching “Carbon Emission Decoupling” goals for on-demand retail services.

ISO 14068 provides principles, requirements, and guidance for achieving and demonstrating carbon neutrality. According to the International Organization for Standardization, this standard focuses on quantifying, reducing, and offsetting carbon emissions, with an emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the value chain before relying on offsets. It ensures that carbon neutrality efforts are scientifically valid, transparent, and contribute to sustainable development., and communicated transparently.

In 2023, JD Logistics launched its in-house developed Supply Chain Emission Management Platform (SCEMP), which is verified to track over 140 types of carbon emission factors specific to road transportation in China. SCEMP accurately calculates carbon emissions based on real-time transportation routes, providing unmatched precision. To date, SCEMP has supported over 25 leading enterprises across industries such as electronics, apparel, beauty, auto, food, and chemicals, calculating over six million orders and helping partners to reduce over 300 tons of carbon dioxide.

JD Logistics Put Battery Swapping Vehilce in Use

SCEMP also plays a vital role in JD.com’s retail and ecommerce business. The company’s “Green Impact Initiative” leverages SCEMP to offer a mechanism that can monitor, report, verify, and create value for customers. For instance, Apple and Logitech have participated in this initiative to offer customers “carbon reduce privilege” products. When customers purchase these labeled items on JD’s app, they can earn rewards such as coupons and merchandise.

Through its innovative solutions and commitment to sustainability, JD Logistics continues to lead the way in reducing carbon emissions across the logistics industry. The company’s dedication to carbon neutrality not only supports its own environmental goals but also empowers its partners to contribute to a more sustainable future.

JD.com Launches 2024 Agricultural Specialties Festival, Strengthening Commitment to Farm-to-Table Excellence

In celebration of the 2024 Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival, JD.com has officially launched its Agricultural Specialties Shopping Festival with a high-profile event in Beijing on September 19. Showcasing 107 categories of premium agricultural products from over 2,000 production zones across China, JD.com is supporting the festival with a substantial 1.5 billion RMB (USD 213 million) investment in subsidies and marketing initiatives. This move is part of JD’s aim to solidify its position as the leading platform for China’s finest agricultural goods.

Now in its third year, the festival runs through September 30 and highlights JD’s commitment to promoting high-quality, locally sourced agricultural brands. JD is offering a series of exclusive promotions featuring standout products such as Inner Mongolian grass-fed lamb, locally grown macadamia nuts, and Wuchang rice. To further elevate these offerings, the festival will feature harvest celebrations and product launch events that showcase China’s rich agricultural heritage.

Through its supermarket division, JD Super, the company is leveraging its self-operated business model to ensure the highest standards of quality through its “Source-Selected” product range. JD’s innovative “Direct from Source” model reduces supply chain friction, speeding up the delivery of farm-fresh goods directly to consumers’ tables. The strict quality assurance process includes origin verification, warehouse inspections, random audits, and unannounced spot checks to guarantee safety, reliability, and exceptional product standards. Currently, JD’s “Direct from Source” program offers over 16,000 types of agricultural products.

Since 2014, JD has been implementing its rural “3F” strategy—Factory to Country, Finance to Country, and Farm to Table. By building a robust logistics infrastructure across the country, JD has empowered rural farmers to harness modern supply chains, increasing the value of their agricultural products. This year marks the 10th anniversary of JD’s rural development initiative, which has led to the creation of numerous specialty agricultural brands, including “Running Chicken,” “Swimming Duck,” “Flying Pigeon,” and “Suqian Hairy Crabs.” These programs have played a pivotal role in lifting farmers in remote areas out of poverty and into economic prosperity.

In 2021, JD launched its ambitious “March-to-Rich” initiative with the goal of generating over one trillion RMB in rural economic output. JD surpassed this target in June 2023, three years ahead of schedule. This initiative has directly benefited millions of rural households, increasing incomes and laying a solid foundation for long-term economic growth.
