CIFTIS_4: JD’s AI-Driven Digitalization Services Support Transformation of Industries

by Rachel Liu and Yuchuan Wang

As one of JD’s key business sectors, JD Digits is participating in the exhibition of the 2020 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), which JD serves as its strategic partner. At the exhibition, JD Digits highlights its solutions including intelligent city, blockchain, AI and robots to show its ability to provide one-stop services for different industries to support digital transformation through AI-driven industrial digitalization services. With the solutions, clients from traditional industries will be able to improve their automation ability and achieve digital transformation and upgrade more efficiently.

JD Digits’ Intelligent City is based on the Intelligent City Operating System, which is an open, “component-ized”, and standardized big data and AI-enabled platform to collect, store, manage, and analyze the data of cities. The project integrates JD’s technology capabilities in e-commerce, logistics, finance, big data, AI and cloud computing to build an intelligent city ecosystem that can analyze the city’s conditions and provide suggestions for its future development.

The JD Digits indoor delivery robot can be applied in multiple scenarios such as hospitals, nursing homes, office buildings, and hotels to deliver medical products, food, delivery parcels and more. Earlier this year, to help medical staff on the frontlines fighting COVID-19, JD Digits provided its indoor delivery robot to a Shanghai hospital treating coronavirus patients. The robot helped transport medical supplies to contaminated areas, thereby reducing the risk for medical personnel of being exposed to the highly contagious virus.

“I’m surprised this robot was at the frontlines fighting COVID-19. It seems robots have developed and become so mature and JD is obvious a leader in this area,” said Ms. Wang, a colleague student from Renmin University.

JD Digits provided its indoor delivery robot to a Shanghai hospital treating coronavirus patientsIn addition to the delivery robot, JD Digits developed an inspection robot specifically for IDCs (intelligent data centers). Powered by AI technology and multiple sensors, the robot is designed for environment and equipment checks in IDC. “The inspection robot has the ability to check a single server’s status in 30 seconds and help banks reduce IDC operating costs by up to 50%. It has been applied to some computer rooms of JD’s partners, including The People’s Bank of China and Industrial & Commercial Bank of China.”,” said Fujia Hou, an engineer of the robotics department at JD Digits, who was giving  introductions to visitors at the JD Digits’ booth on September 5th.

JD Digits also exhibited its blockchain tracing platform

JD Digits also exhibited its blockchain tracing platform which is designed to ensure a transparent supply chain of authentic products to online consumers. As of June this year, it has collaborated with over 1,000 brand owners and helped track more than 90,000 SKUs (stock keeping units) on JD ranging from fresh produce, baby and maternal products, liquor, beauty products, medicine, and luxury and cross-border products.

Top International Media Visit JD’s Asia No. 1 Warehouse

by Ella Kidron

JD.com hosted a group of international and English-language representatives from the media on September 4th  in its highly automated Asia No. 1 fulfillment center in Beijing. The purpose of the tour was to illustrate how the high level of automation in the fulfillment center was able to ensure stable operations under COVID, as well as how it is able to respond with agility to peak shopping festivals such as the 619 Grand Promotion and Singles Day (November 11th). Several outlets such as South China Morning Post, NHK of Japan, Swedish Radio, Agence France Presse (AFP), CGTN and several US media were in attendance, with a total of over a dozen reporters joining the event.

During the tour, reporters visited JD’s shuttle system, its automated ground vehicle (AGV) system called Dilang(Ground Wolf) which was developed in house, as well as the sorting facility. The tour further helped the media to understand the journey of a package from order placement down to preparation for the last mile delivery.

JD’s 19-storey shuttle system greatly improves storage capacity. Picking of goods is also made much more efficient. As compared with manual picking, the shuttle system enables a “goods to person” model, where the products for a given customer order will be retrieved automatically. Automated picking is six-to-eight times more efficient than manual picking. Storage efficiency is also 10 times that of traditional storage.

The “Dilang” AGV researched in-house by JD logistics is used for picking goods.

The Dilang AGV researched in-house by JD logistics is used for picking goods. A logistics firm in Germany has ordered a whole set of AGV last month from JD to be installed at their warehouse. The AGVs can recognize QR codes on the floor and use them for route planning as well as automatic obstacle avoidance. The pickers can stay on the working platform and wait for the AGVs to come to them. With this system, pickers can pick about 250 orders per hour each, which is three times the efficiency of a traditional picking approach where the warehouse worker would have to walk to the shelf, get the goods themselves and then go back to the packing area.

JD started building its first automated logistics fulfillment center in Shanghai in July 2009

Finally JD’s advanced computer vision-based sorting system ensures that all orders end up in the right place before they are sent off to the company’s delivery stations for the last mile delivery to the customer.

JD started building its first automated logistics fulfillment center in Shanghai in July 2009. As the name “Asia No. 1” indicates, the plan was to build the largest scale and most advanced network of e-commerce logistics centers in Asia. The ultimate goal is to increase efficiency and reduce costs. In 2012, JD took the lead in building the first e-commerce operations center, integrating temporary storage, order processing, sorting and distribution. It came into operation in 2014, around the time of JD’s IPO on the Nasdaq. The following year, the first Asia No. 1 to handle small items was put into operations in Guangzhou.

With the rapid growth of JD’s business, the speed of construction of Asia No. 1 projects has also sped up. As of June 2020, JD had a total of 28 Asia No. 1 projects in operation, with eight main logistics hubs in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Shenyang, Xi’an and Hangzhou.

CIFTIS_3: JD Business Showcases Smart Procurement Solution for Enterprises

by Rachel Liu

September 5th is the second day of the 2020 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) at China National Convention Center, Beijing. This year, the theme of the event is “Global Services, Shared Prosperity”. Ximei Wang, an operations manager of JD Business, JD.com’s enterprise procurement business, has been busy receiving visitors at the exhibition area who are interested in applying JD’s smart procurement solution in their companies. “Many visitors told me that they think our smart procurement solution is a great match with their own business,” said Wang.

This year, JD Business has three main products on show at the CIFTIS: JD Procurement Cloud, Smart Procurement Management Platform and AI Procurement Brain. COVID-19 has caused many challenges to supply chain as many companies faced transportation challenges and a shortage of funds, stopping them from resuming operations Supply chain digitalization can not only improve the information processing ability of companies, but also make the supply chain more transparent and traceable, which will improve the efficiency of operations. The products showcased by JD Business are the latest achievements by the company to help enterprises with digital supply chain transformation.

Xun Jian, general manager of procurement solutions at JD Business said: “As new infrastructure has become a key driver for China’s economic growth, the industry is looking for better supply chain services. We only brought part of JD Business’s solution for smart procurement to CIFTIS 2020. In the future, we hope to join hands with more partners and clients to provide more valuable services for enterprises, and hopefully contribute to China’s supply chain upgrade.”

JD Procurement Cloud

JD Procurement Cloud can help enterprises build a one-stop procurement digital solution that integrates demand management, bidding, supplier management, implementation and finance settlement. Supplier management is usually the most complicated business, and JD Procurement Cloud can grade the suppliers and provide different management strategies. JD’s massive supplier resources can provide a supplement to the existing supplier pool of enterprises. JD’s experience in supplier management and e-commerce operation is especially helpful in managing non-standardized and long-tail products.

The Smart Procurement Management Platform provides technical support for the commodity and operations management of enterprises and builds a seamless platform with both internal and external data through integrating the company’s finance, logistics, supply chain and services. The model that JD Business built at CIFTIS shows how the Smart Procurement Management Platform can be applied to a steel factory. The platform can provide a one-stop smart procurement solution for the factory throughout all the key production processes.

The AI Procurement Brain provides intelligent decision making services for enterprises. It can collection and analyze the data of the enterprise and deduce the procurement demand precisely, helping the company make the most optimal decision. For example, for product selection, AI Procurement Brain can provide suggestions based on a series of factors, including which industry the enterprise is in, location, employee preferences and usage scenarios. For price selection, it can review the pricing of products from different channels, and provide an alert when the price is too high.

Sales Doubled For New Home Appliance Products On JD

by Martin Li

The sales of new home appliance products has been more than doubled in the first half of this year, compared with the same period last year, according to JD’s recent report on home appliance product consumption trends.

This increase corresponded with a 78% jump in the frequency of new product launches on JD.com during the same period. The report also found that people were more likely to purchase new products within the first week of their launches— including large home appliances, kitchen and bathroom products, and life electronics.

People aged between 26 and 45 play the most active role in seeking out new products, while male consumers and married people are most likely to purchase, according to the report.

The report also noted that different groups are driven to purchase new home appliances based on distinctive needs. For example, people who live in rented homes tend to prefer multi-function appliances in smaller sizes with a fancier aesthetic. Retro-style home appliances like ovens were popular in the first half of the year, a category that grew by over eight times in sales compared with the same period last year.

JD upgraded its platform for product launches last May, naming it JD Xiaomofang (JD Little Rubik’s Cube). The platform is aimed at helping brands better understand consumer needs, develop related features, and recommend new products to people who need them most with the help of JD’s consumer insights.

The platform has cooperated with renowned brands including Huawei, Dyson, Lenovo, L’oreal and P&G to launch new products.

On the first day of JD’s 618 Grand Promotion season this year, which started June 1st , it took only 2.5 minutes for Huawei subsidiary smartphone brand Honor to sell over 10,000 X1 smart screens on the platform.
